Threefold repetition is when a game is drawn due to the position in a game being the same three times in the game. If the same position occurs three times, with the same side to move, and with the same rights to castle and capture en passant, then any side can claim a draw (before or after playing its move). It is important to note that the moves leading to these repeated positions are legal. The positions do not have to occur in sequence. A first occurrence may happen at move 25, the second one at move 45, and the last one at move 70, and that would be drawn.

A player can force a draw by threefold repetition with perpetual check.
