  Savielly Tartakower (1887–1956) was an influential grandmaster in the first half of the 1900s. He lived in Poland but eventually had to move to France. He fought in World War I as a staff officer. He became interested in chess during college and won his first tournament in 1906 and in 1909 came in second in a tournament in Vienna. He won the Polish Chess Championship twice. He participated in several Chess Olympiads winning a few medals along the way. He became on par with other greats of his time including Aaron Nimzowitch. Tartakower was also won of the first international chess masters. Tartakower died at the age of 68 in 1956.
