For the 2020 Netflix series, see The Queen's Gambit (Netflix Series).

The Queen's Gambit is a chess opening that starts with the moves:

  1. d4 d5
  2. c4

It is one of the oldest openings and is still played today.

Overview[]

White wants to gain control of the center so he plays 2. c4, trying to deflect Black’s d-pawn from the center. If Black takes the c4 pawn, then White can play 3. e3 b5 4. a4 c6 5. axb5 cxb5 and 6. Qf3 wins a piece, as Black will have to sacrifice a knight or bishop to save his rook.

To avoid this, Black can also decline the gambit by playing moves like c6 (the Slav Defense) and e6 (the Queen’s Gambit Declined).
