White has a luft square for his/her king (a2),

and he/she sacrifices the queen so that if the black rook takes White’s queen,

Black will get back-rank mated because the king’s escape squares are blocked by pawns 

and there is no luft for the king.

A luft is a flight square on the 2nd or 7th rank for a castled king, created by pushing the 2nd or 7th rank pawns forward.
