Losing chess, also called antichess or suicide chess, is one of the most popular chess variants.

The rules of losing chess are the same as those of regular chess, except the following:

  • Players must capture an enemy piece if possible.
    • If multiple captures are available, the capturing player will get to choose.
  • There is no castling.
  • The king is not subject to check or checkmate, and therefore can be captured like any other piece.
    • Thus, it is permitted to expose the king to capture.
    • A pawn may also promote to a king.
  • If stalemate occurs as a result of one player having no legal move, or one player having no pieces remaining on the board, that player wins the game.
