King and Rook Mate

The king and rook mate, or also rook and king mate is a checkmate pattern involving a rook and a king vs king in a clear board.

Instructions[]

  1. Raise your rook one rank below the king.
  2. Position your king one rank below the rook and one file apart from the other king (on their move). The kings should be a knight's move away.
  3. If the opposing king moves one square horizontally away from your king, copy his move. You could think of it as maintaining the knight's distance.
  4. Repeat until you have chased the opposing king to the left or right edge.
  5. The other king can only move to your file. This is the moment when you move your rook up by one: driving the king one rank closer to the top edge.
  6. Repeat steps 2-5. Checkmate will transpire on step 5 when the king is on the 8th rank. The king would be unable to move one square higher, because that is off the board.

Notes[]

  • The mate can be applied sideways or backwards.
  • Steps 1-4: If your rook is attacked or it can't move to a specified position, move it to another square on the rank.
  • Steps 1-4: If the opposing king unexpectedly moves one rank higher, you can skip a cycle by moving the rook up one square.
  • Steps 1-4: If possible, you can transpose a forwards mate into a sideways or backwards mate by clever positioning of the rook.
  • Steps 2-4: Play a waiting move if the kings are a knight's distance away on YOUR move.
  • Steps 3-4: If the opposing king moves to the same file as your king, you can skip to step 5.
