Black occupies the key square g7, blocking the g-pawn and drawing the game. If 1...Kg8??, white plays 2.Kg6, opposing the black king.

A key square is a square that is critical for the king to get to. If the king gets to that square, then it could either allow his pawn to promote or enforce the capture of an enemy pawn.
